Happy Holidays from my family to yours! This year has certainly had its ups and downs, but one thing is for certain: I am so grateful for my amazing clients and feel honoured for the opportunity to help watch over your finances.
I wanted to take this time to reflect on the past year, as well as the holiday season in general. In today’s rushed world, more and more people feel stress during the holiday season. A study from 2017 (I’d hate to see these numbers today!) showed us what we spend our money on during the season:
Cards and postage: $32.43
Floral arrangements: $22.61
Food and candy: $95.04
Decorations: $51.43
Travel: $960.50
Gifts: $750.68
So, in keeping with the spirit of the season and to help you focus on what really matters, here are some suggestions for excellent gifts that cost little to nothing.
The Gift of Listening: The key here is that you must REALLY listen. With all the distractions competing for our eyes and minds, giving your undivided attention takes effort, but it will be much appreciated by the recipient. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your response—just listening…to your children or grandchildren as they excitedly tell you what they enjoy most about this time of year. As your spouse recounts fond memories of holidays past. To the carolers who tramp around in the cold, aiming to spread just a little holiday cheer. Listen. You might be surprised at the value of what you hear.
The Gift of Affection: Appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back, and warm handshakes are small actions that can demonstrate the love you have for family and friends—so be generous with them!
The Gift of Laughter: You know the old saying that laughter is the best medicine. In the midst of uncertainty and an abundance of sad news around us, even a small laugh goes a long way. Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, “I love to laugh with you.”
The Gift of a Written Note: Don’t overthink this! It can be as simple as a “Thanks for the help” note—or a full sonnet if the mood strikes you. It’s no exaggeration to say that a brief, handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life.
The Gift of a Compliment: A simple and sincere “You look great in red,” “You did a fantastic job,” “Thanks for washing the dishes,” or “That was a wonderful meal” can make someone’s day so much brighter.
The Gift of a Favour: Every day, go out of your way to do something kind—and expect nothing in return.
The Gift of Solitude: You know that feeling when all you desire in the world is to have a little alone time. Be sensitive to those moments in those around you, and be ready to give the gift of solitude when appropriate.
The Gift of a Cheerful Disposition: The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone. It’s really not that hard to simply say a cheerful “Hello” or “Thank you.”
This season, I hope we can remember that the gifts that will last a lifetime, and won’t be tossed aside when they get old or worn out, are truly the gifts that make the holidays special. You can’t put a price tag on these gifts that prove to be of the most value.
Thank You for a Wonderful Year!
