I frequently get the opportunity to meet and assist various women who need help getting a handle on their financial positions. Unfortunately, some women lack the training they need to be successful in managing their finances. With that in mind, I have developed some fantastic educational tools specifically designed with women in mind. My Dynamic Wealth Program For Women has assisted many women in beginning to manage their finances, learn about investing, and be more engaged in their financial affairs.
While there are many unique and interesting stories that I can share with you, here are a few examples of some of the women I’ve helped in the past. In the spirit of confidentiality, their names have been changed.
Client 1
Shirley is 35, single, and works for a nonprofit organization. She lives a modest, socially conscious lifestyle, and has recently entered into a committed relationship. With this background, Shirley came to me with a few specific concerns.
Her father passed away a few years ago, leaving her an inheritance. She wanted help learning how to manage the inheritance.
Her dream was to be in a position by age 50 to pursue other passions. She needed a path to turn her goals into her future.
First, we evaluated Shirley’s situation. She would need a disciplined and somewhat aggressive investment strategy if she was going to be able to reach her goal of financial freedom by age 50.
Shirley was very open-minded and asked many probing questions. She was also willing to consider all investment options. In particular, we decided to focus on the U.S market since it’s the most dynamic and offers us the most opportunities. After reflecting together, we decided that the Flex Investment Strategy, with an emphasis on growth, would be a perfect fit for her circumstances.
The Flex Investment Strategy is a program that adjusts your income and equity components according to market conditions. By not blindly following a “buy and hold” strategy, Shirley was able to keep her options open, while still taking advantage of various market opportunities to grow her holdings.
Client 2
Danielle is in her mid 40s, divorced, and self-employed. She’s a driven woman with plans and dreams, but was expected to follow whatever plans her ex-husband had made for their future. The divorce had supplied a generous settlement, allowing her to have some opportunities to explore some of her own initiatives.
Danielle’s passion is to start a wellness centre, with a focus on mental health. She came to me to work out how to get on a path to making that a reality.
Since Danielle had some resources to work with, her situation mostly required a comprehensive plan. To get her on track, we worked on a Life by Design Plan using a Vision Board. My Life by Design Plan is a detailed system I use to help you organize and clarify your dreams and the life you envision for yourself. This system helps you figure out the non-negotiables so you won’t compromise on the path to success! So much more than a simple financial plan.
The beauty of the Vision Board is that it allows us to visualize the progress and check in every year to see how things are unfolding. If anything has gotten out of line from the vision, we can easily see it and make corrections.
The Flex Investment Strategy also makes a lot of sense for Danielle’s situation, and by utilizing it, she should be able to pursue her dream faster than she would otherwise.
Client 3
Fatima is in her 70’s and has been a widow for 5 years. Her husband took all responsibility for the finances and investments during their marriage until his passing, and then those responsibilities fell to her though she was not adequately prepared. Fortunately, Fatima did not have any debt to contend with, but her income was only about $40,000, with investments of about $100,000.
Her concerns and fears were not surprising.
Fatima’s biggest concern was running out of money. Particularly since her bank Advisor, after doing a profile on her, concluded that she would run out of money by age 83!!
She needed to figure out the best options for her required RRIF income.
She needed training for basic investment management so that her resources would last.
When I saw the low interest rates on her portfolio of fixed-income investments, I knew we needed to make a change. Despite her age and generally conservative nature, Fatima understood that she needed greater growth for her investment to survive. This was crucial since Fatima did not want to be a burden on her children.
By carefully balancing between growth and safety, Fatima has managed to successfully withdraw her annual RRIF income. Despite market declines in 2016, 2019, and 2020, our careful planning has led to growth in her portfolio.
